muqri is a companion for reciting the Qurʾān, by invitation only. It is run by Adel Frad. Questions and requests: [email protected].
What muqri keeps, and why
- Your account: your e-mail address (to sign in and to reset a forgotten password), an optional display name, and your password as a one-way scrypt hash that cannot be read back.
- A device identifier: a random identifier for each device you use muqri on, kept with your recitations and with the agreement you give on that device.
- Your recitation, to score it: what you recite is sent to our servers while you recite, so the app can follow you and give its verdict. Without your agreement below, the audio is used for that and not kept.
- Your recordings, only if you agree to “Help improve muqri” on a device: each recording made from that device is then kept, with your account and what the app found in it, to train the model that corrects recitation and so that a qāriʾ reviewing for muqri can listen to it. Copies used for training are kept on the operator’s own computer and its backup drive.
- Your results: the app’s findings for each recitation, and a qāriʾ’s review of it when there is one — you are told in the app when a qāriʾ has reviewed you.
muqri does not sell data, show advertising, or use tracking or analytics services.
How long: your account, your results and the reviews of them are kept until your account is deleted; recordings you agreed to keep, until you withdraw that agreement or delete your account; copies of the database expire after 14 days.
Where it is kept
- The website and its database: Hetzner, in Germany.
- The recitation scoring: Akamai (Linode), in Frankfurt, Germany.
- E-mails (confirming your address, resetting your password) are sent through Resend, which receives your e-mail address and the message.
- The site is reached through Cloudflare, which carries the connection — including what you recite — between your device and our servers.
Everything travels over HTTPS. The database is copied every night on our own server and each copy is kept for 14 days; recordings are not part of those copies.
Your choices
- Withdraw your agreement at any time in Settings, on each device where you gave it. The recordings kept from that device are deleted from our servers; the findings stay, so your history remains. Copies already made for training on the operator’s computer are deleted when you ask, at the address above.
- Delete your account in the app: Profile → Delete my account (Settings → Delete my account leads there), with your password. Your sign-in, e-mail, name and results are deleted at once, and your name is taken off the reviews you made. You choose whether the recordings you agreed to keep are deleted too — they are, unless you untick it; kept ones stay for training without your name. Deleted recordings are erased from both our servers within minutes (a server that is briefly offline erases them when it is back), the operator is told to remove them from the training copies on his computer, and copies of the database expire 14 days later. Recordings made on a device while signed out belong to that device: Settings → Delete my recordings, on that device. If you cannot sign in, write to [email protected] from the address of your account; it is done within 30 days.
- A copy, or a correction, of what muqri keeps about you: write to the same address.
Children
For now muqri is for people aged 13 and older. Younger learners will be able to join later, with a parent’s or guardian’s verified agreement. muqri does not ask for or check anyone’s age: if you are a parent or guardian and a child under 13 has an account, write to the address above and the account and its recordings are deleted.
